First cannabis ad seen in the Metaverse
Kandy Girl claims to be the very first cannabis company to advertise in the Metaverse. Users of the game Decentraland will be able to walk past a virtual store operated by the Florida-based brand, as one internet user pointed out. «Kandy Girl is the first cannabis company in history to advertise THC-containing products in the Metaverse.», the press release proudly proclaims.
This new type of virtual world is—more or less—like a mix of «The Sims» and «Minecraft.» The difference from “The Sims” is that Decentraland operates using cryptocurrencies: you have to pay to buy plots of land, on which you can build whatever you want.
Initially, properties were worth 1,000 LAND (the cryptocurrency used); today, their prices fluctuate and can reach as high as 100,000. It’s exactly the same principle as in real life: when there’s high demand for real estate in a city, prices go up.
The buzz surrounding this game hasn’t gone unnoticed by cannabis sellers. Kandy Girls purchased a plot for 3,850 MANA, or $13,000. She built her advertisement on that same property. And that’s not all: the company will soon open a «dispensary» where it will sell virtual cannabis, represented by NFT tokens.
Psychotropic and Legal Candies
For the Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based company, this is above all a massive publicity stunt. And not just in the Metaverse. This news is drawing the cannabis industry’s attention to Kandy Girls. The company seems very proud of its innovation: selling THC-infused candies—which are psychoactive… but legal.
«Legality is due to a legal vacuum in the Farm Bill of 2018, the company explains. »Since our candies weigh 4 grams, they can contain 10 mg of THC and still remain below the permitted THC limit of 0.3 %." A 10-mg dose is enough to produce a «high.».
A second advantage for Kandy Girl: circumventing advertising restrictions on cannabis. Since it is a product that is sometimes illegal, and sometimes permitted for adults but prohibited for minors, It is difficult to advertise cannabis in the United States. But in the Metaverse, there are currently no laws on the subject… for now.
