Cannabis legalization reduces youth consumption, according to a major study
In recent years, the debate on legalization of marijuana has often focused on concerns about its potential impact on the use of psychoactive substances among young people.
A detailed report from’American Medical Association (AMA) suggests that these fears may be unfounded. The study, published in JAMA Pediatrics, challenges conventional wisdom and sheds light on the complex relationship between cannabis policy reform and adolescent behavior.
Overview of the AMA study
The AMA report, authored by researchers at Boston College and the University of Maryland at College Park, analyzed data from 47 U.S. states and nearly 900,000 adolescents. Contrary to popular belief, the study showed that the legalization of cannabis for adults and the opening of retail stores did not result in an increase of the cannabis use among young people. On the contrary, it revealed a notable trend: more young people said they would abstain from drinking cannabis, the’alcohol and vaping products following these reforms.
The results of the study «The findings »reinforce previous conclusions that legalizing and regulating cannabis for adults does not generally increase consumption of this substance among young people".
The longitudinal analysis carried out by AMA researchers also underlines the importance of examining the long-term trends of the cannabis policy. Over time, the study reveals a trend whereby each additional year of legalization of recreational cannabis is associated with a lower probability of cannabis use among teenagers. Similarly, the opening of cannabis retail markets was associated with a greater likelihood of abstinence from cannabis and’using e-cigarettes among young people.
The study concludes that the legalization of cannabis and improved market regulation have not made it any easier for teenagers to enter the market. use of psychoactive substances.
Beyond these conclusions, the report acknowledges certain problems related to the availability of cannabis on retail markets. In particular, young people who were already using cannabis increased the frequency of their consumption after the opening of the retail outlets, This underlines the importance of targeted interventions for this sub-group.’teenage consumers.
