Fluence is back at MJBizCon and is unveiling the ninth annual edition of the Cannabis Business Times report on the state of the cannabis lighting market
The leader in the cannabis lighting industry will showcase its latest innovations in state-of-the-art lighting, multi-tier lighting, and supplemental lighting at the 2024 MJBizCon
AUSTIN, Texas, and EINDHOVEN, Netherlands–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Fluence, a leading global provider of energy-efficient LED lighting solutions for commercial cannabis production, has released the ninth edition of its annual “State of the Cannabis Lighting Market” report, in collaboration with Cannabis Business Times, a publication aimed at accelerating the success and market acceptance of the cannabis industry by providing concrete, actionable information to support all aspects of the industry.
This year’s report highlights new evidence of the rapid and steady adoption of LED technology by cannabis growers. Survey participants also expressed a growing interest in supplementing their top-lighting solutions with side, inter-canopy, or under-canopy lighting fixtures.
«The adoption of LEDs is becoming the universal standard for critical stages of cannabis cultivation, offering higher yields than HPS while generating less heat and consuming less energy, without compromising crop quality,» said Dr. David Hawley, chief scientist at Fluence. «For growers, these benefits have spurred growing interest in adding lighting within the canopy, whether it’s inter-canopy or sub-canopy lighting.» Fluence’s studies have shown that these solutions, when integrated in a complementary manner with overhead lighting, can improve yields and the quality of buds located in the lower part of the canopy,” he added.
Here are the report's main findings:
- Seventy-eight percent of respondents to the survey reported using LEDs during the vegetative phase, while 77 % use them for flowering; this represents an increase of 61 and 62 percentage points, respectively, compared to the first edition of the report in 2016.
- Sixty-five percent of commercial growers planning to add lighting over the next 12 months want to explore solutions to optimize overhead lighting, particularly with side, inter-canopy, or under-canopy fixtures. Growers’ interest in inter-canopy lighting has increased by 10 percentage points compared to 2023.
- Forty-two percent of respondents identified «crop quality» as the most important factor in their decision to adopt LED technology.
- Twenty-three percent of the growers surveyed indicated that a spectrum containing 40 to 50 % of red was the most important spectral characteristic for the flowering stage.
This report comes ahead of MJBizCon 2024, where Fluence will unveil the latest innovations in its VYPR, RAPTR, SPYDR, and VYNE product lines. The company will also host public discussions at its booth, led by renowned cannabis researchers and growers, such as Travis Higginbotham, founder and CEO of Due Diligence Horticulture, and Dave Holmes, founder and CEO of Clade.9
«Cannabis growers are innovators at heart. They quickly adopt new technologies and adapt their use to the specific needs of their facilities. They actively collaborate, seeking to learn from the industry’s brightest minds to advance their cultivation practices,» said Steve Graves, Fluence’s senior vice president of strategy and business development, in his introductory letter to the “State of the Cannabis Lighting Market” report.
«We look forward to making new connections at MJBizCon and demonstrating how our lighting technology can help growers optimize the quality of their plants while exceeding their business goals,» added Mr. Graves.
Dr. Hawley will also discuss the growing interest in intercanopy lighting during his session at MJBizCon titled “Maximizing Cannabis Yield with Intercanopy Lighting: Strategies and Best Practices.” This session will take place on December 5 at 10:50 a.m. (PST) in Room 1. Be sure to stop by Fluence’s booth, No. 43023, at the trade show.

Methodology
The study for the 2024 State of the Cannabis Lighting Market report was conducted by the independent research firm Readex Research, which also compiled the data. In August 2024, a questionnaire was sent to all active subscribers of the Cannabis Business Times in the United States and Canada. To provide relevant information for commercial cannabis growers, the analysis focused on the 189 respondents who currently own or work at a facility that grows cannabis indoors and/or in greenhouses. The data was refined to exclude non-commercial operations. Unless otherwise specified, the findings in this report pertain solely to participants involved in the commercial cultivation of cannabis indoors and/or in greenhouses, with or without supplemental lighting. The margin of error for percentages based on these 189 participants is ±7.1 percentage points, with a 95% confidence level.
