Baba
The coffeeshop Baba was one of Amsterdam's best-known and most centrally located coffeeshops, until it closed and reopened in the north of the city. Previously located right in the heart of the city, between Damrak and the red light district, Baba was a casualty of the policy of closing the city's big coffeeshops, such as Grasshopper, to replace them with more «decent» venues. Its storefront was one of the most original and often photographed by tourists. Customers could look out over the entrances to the Red Light District, while consuming their joint.
The coffee souvenir store, however, remains on Warmoesstraat. The Baba Souvenirshop sells smoking accessories (leaves, lighters, grinders, etc.), seeds and t-shirts with cannabic or Amsterdam motifs.
Today, Baba is located in a more secluded area, almost on the edge of Amsterdam harbor. This in no way detracts from the menu or the friendly staff, and considerably eases the pressure on what used to be a very crowded place. The coffee shop is very discreet from the outside, and has two comfortable rooms to welcome its customers. Vaporizers and bongs are available for smokers.
Baba coffeeshop menu
You'll find Amsterdam staples such as Jack Herer, White Widow and Super Silver Haze, as well as the occasional pre-rolled pure joint of Chocolope or Cheese, with prices in line with the Amsterdam average (a little pricey, but some pleasant surprises depending on deliveries).
On the hashish side, Lebanese, Afghan and Moroccan, with prices ranging from €8 to €13 a gram.
If you didn't like the old Baba, now's your chance to try it again. The Indian and Hindu-inspired interior, taken from its original location, lends a special charm to every visit.
