Your genes and personality can determine your use of cannabis
A study genome-wide association study (GWAS) has determined that regular cannabis use is associated with certain personality traits, and can be determined by the psychology and psychiatry of the individual.
Influence of personality
Depending on the method used, the researchers found that between 21 and 35 genes have a different expression in regular cannabis users compared to non-users, and are therefore likely to determine this consumption. The most significant gene is CADM2, associated with low risk perception and neuroticism, which characterizes a persistent tendency to experience negative emotions.
The variations in the CADM2 gene are associated with optimistic and carefree profiles, seeking novelty and new experiences, and prone to the use of other substances and risky behavior. Other factors that this gene can influence include body mass index and feelings of reduced anxiety. A negative relationship between regular cannabis use and conscientiousness is also noted.
Influence of psychiatry
EAEGs are a method used to establish correlations between an individual's genetic factors and the phenotype of diseases. This study focuses in particular on the phenotype of schizophrenia. Using Mendelian randomization, the researchers found weak evidence for a causal link between regular cannabis use and schizophrenia, but significant evidence for the opposite. Predispositions to schizophrenia could therefore explain regular cannabis use. Whereas it was commonly thought that cannabis aggravated schizophrenia, recent studies corroborate the results of this EAEG and some even consider that CBD has antipsychotic effects.
Positive correlations were also found with phenotypes relating to the use of and dependence on other substances such as tobacco and alcohol, as well as with phenotypes of diseases such as hyperactivity and schizophrenia. While these results are convincing from an epidemiological point of view, there are some reservations about the relationship between personality genetics and cannabis use. Many people with diverse genetic and psychological profiles smoke cannabis regularly and, according to the study, genetic determination is only valid up to 11 %. Among the factors that can influence consumption, the social environment can also be a significant determinant. Sociological studies on the subject would be a plus.
