Cannabidivarin (CBDv)
A non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, similar to cannabidiol (CBD). CBDV interacts with components of the endocannabinoid system to regulate brain function, and shows great promise in the treatment of epilepsy.
What is CBDv?
CBDV is one of hundreds of chemicals naturally produced by the cannabis plant, known as cannabinoids. Like its chemical counterparts, the cannabinoid CBDV interacts with your body's endocannabinoid system to create a range of effects. In many ways, CBDV works like CBD, and its potential therapeutic properties.
Medical benefits of CBDv
To date, research suggests that CBDV may be useful in treating epileptic seizures, Crohn's disease, HIV/AIDS-related symptoms and multiple sclerosis. Important studies on the effects of CBDV have been conducted:
- Visit 2013, researchers concluded that CBDV, like THC, «may have therapeutic potential for reducing nausea».
- A 2018 report concluded that CBDV could be a useful form of treatment for autism spectrum disorder.
- A 2018 article revealed that CBDV helped improve the health of mice with Rett syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder with a range of behavioral and physiological symptoms.
- Visit 2019, Researchers have found that CBDV helps improve cognitive, motor and neurological functions associated with certain types of genetic disorders.
- Researchers recently published a study suggesting that CBDV could help improve muscle quality and slow the muscle degeneration associated with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
What's the difference between CBD and CDBv?
The main difference between CBD and CBDv is that CBDv has proven effects in reducing epileptic seizures caused by Rett syndrome. Despite this, CBDv is still in clinical trials and has not yet been approved.
CBD is used medicinally and in cannabis medicines to reduce seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome.
Cannabis varieties with high CBDv content
Indica-dominant genetics from Africa and Asia are thought to contain high levels of CBDv, but many sativas can also contain high levels of CBDv. Some strains with high CBD content may also have high CBDv content. The following cannabis varieties have been bred with CBDv content in mind, or have been tested as high in CBDv:
