Cannabis decriminalized in Trinidad and Tobago
Fast-track decriminalization of cannabis in Trinidad and Tobago. The bill presented in November and passed by the House of Representatives mid-December finally became law and took effect on December 23.
President Paula-Mae Weekes has enacted the law a few days earlier:
«And whereas it is appropriate that the Act come into force on December 23, 2019: now, therefore, I, Paula-Mae Weekes, the aforementioned President, hereby fix December 23, 2019, as the date on which the Act shall come into force. Given under my hand and the seal of the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago at the Office of the President, St. Ann’s, this 20th day of December 2019.»
As of last Monday, adults may possess up to 30 grams of cannabis and grow up to four plants at home. Consumption is not permitted in public places or in private places accessible to the public.
Like as we explained earlier, Along with decriminalization, Trinidad and Tobago intends to legalize cannabis through a second bill, the Cannabis Control Bill. Before the project can move forward, a parliamentary committee has been tasked with submitting a report in February that will outline the options for establishing a licensing system to regulate commercial activities related to cannabis.
