More Americans use cannabis than alcohol on a daily basis
There are now more daily cannabis users than daily alcohol drinkers in the USA, although alcohol consumption remains far more widespread in terms of monthly consumption.
While cannabis users are less numerous than alcohol consumers in the United States, According to a recent YouGov survey, daily cannabis users outnumber daily drinkers.
The survey was conducted online from June 7 to 10, 2024 among 1,116 U.S. adults, with an approximate margin of error of 4%.
According to the survey, 8% of American adults use cannabis daily (5% several times a day, 3% once a day), while 5% of Americans are daily drinkers (2% several times a day, 3% once a day).
These results correspond to an analysis of the annual national survey on drug use and health, published in May in the magazine Addiction.
The YouGov survey results also showed that, apart from daily use, alcohol use continues to outstrip cannabis use in almost all other areas: alcohol consumption, for example, exceeds cannabis consumption when it comes to consumption a few times a week (12% alcohol, 5% cannabis), once a week (8% alcohol, 1% cannabis), a few times a month (10% alcohol, 2% cannabis) or only once a month (6% alcohol, 1% cannabis).
In addition, 51% of those surveyed said they had never tried cannabis, while only 15% said they had never tried alcohol.
Also according to the survey: 30% of American adults think they'd be better off if they drank alcohol less often, while only 11% think they'd be better off if they drank cannabis less often.
In addition, 3% of adults surveyed said it would be better for them to consume alcohol more often, while 10% thought it would be better for them to consume cannabis more often.
The survey also revealed that a solid majority of Americans (60%) thinks cannabis consumption should be legal in the United States. According to a Gallup poll published last November, public support for the federal legalization of cannabis reached 70%.
Another poll released in April revealed that most Americans no longer think cannabis use is stigmatized, and that cannabis will only grow in popularity over time.
