This «THC salt» turns any dish into edible
The preparation of cannabis-infused food, known as edible in the language of Shakespeare, generally involves steeping cannabis in butter or oil, for 20 minutes to 6 hours depending on the cooking method, then strain the mixture to remove the plant matter.
Fortunately, Stillwater, a Colorado-based company, has come to the aid of the state’s aspiring chefs to help them create space food. It has created Ripple, water-soluble THC sticks that can be sprinkled on any food or drink.
Individual packets allow for precise measurement of the edibles. Each packet contains either 5 or 10 mg of THC. Stillwater offers three types of Ripple: sativa, indica, and CBD, with a 1:1 THC-to-CBD ratio for the latter.
«Even in water, it has very little taste,» says Missy Bradley, co-founder of Stillwater. «It’s more of a slight sensation at the back of your tongue.» Stillwater actually uses a cannabis distillate rather than an oil, the terpenes have therefore disappeared.
This also means that when used in a recipe, the final product won’t taste like cannabis—since infused butter can sometimes give the final dish an unpleasant taste.
To successfully create a product that dissolves in water (remember: THC is lipophilic—it binds much more readily to fats than to water), Stillwater mixes the cannabis distillate with’coconut oil and sorbitol, then dehydrates the mixture to turn it into a salt-like powder.
The expected effect will obviously depend on the amount. One dose is equivalent to 10 mg of THC. At 5 mg, the effect will therefore be more of a mild sense of relaxation, without any loss of control. And at 10 mg—the equivalent of a joint—though this, too, depends on the strain, the user, and so on…
According to Missy Bradley, Ripple takes effect in 15 to 30 minutes, faster than a space cake. She explains that with this method of ingestion, THC enters the bloodstream through several pathways—under the tongue, through the digestive tract, and in the liver—resulting in a faster onset of effects.
