New study reveals wider social impact of Barcelona's Cannabis Social Clubs
A recent study by ICEERS, an NGO that analyzes the relationship between society and psychoactive plants, examined the demographics, behavioral patterns and social dynamics of Cannabis Social Club (CSC) members in Barcelona between 2017 and 2020.
The study, based on data from 2007 members of five CSCs, reveals trends in cannabis consumption and the role of these clubs as social spaces. CannabisIndustrie.nl.

Demographics and behavior of Cannabis Social Club members
The study, published in the Journal of Drug Issues, shows that the majority of members are young men, with an average age of 36.1.
Of note are the gender differences in cannabis acquisition patterns and the longer membership duration of women, older adults and medical users, despite their lower cannabis consumption than younger male recreational members.
The role of Cannabis Social Clubs as social spaces
Among the study's key findings was an average daily consumption of 0.44 grams of cannabis, with men consuming more than women.
Members visit the CSCs on average once a week, and the average length of membership is around 1 year and 10 months.
The study also highlights the role of CHCs as social spaces that go beyond cannabis distribution, promoting community development and harm reduction.
Challenges and potential of the legal environment
Despite the uncertain legal status of CSCs in Spain, As researcher Anna Obradors from Rovira i Virgili University points out, the study highlights their crucial role in community care and social well-being.
The study, which contributes to the understanding of the CSC model, was carried out in collaboration with the Catalan Association of Cannabis Clubs (CatFAC) and received essential support from ICEERS Scientific Director José Carlos Bouso and Jakob Manthey.
