Saint Kitts and Nevis launches its medical cannabis regulatory authority
Saint Kitts and Nevis has officially launched its Medical Cannabis Authority.
The seeds of the reform were sown in 2019, when the government at the time, led by the Prime Minister Timothy Harris, introduced a bill to legalize the medical marijuana and to decriminalize personal use by adults. That same year, the High Court The country's government has confirmed the right of Rastafari and other adults to own and grow Cannabis for private use, a first step toward the recognition of civil liberties and culture.
Progress continued in 2020 with the passage of a law officially legalizing medical cannabis and laying the groundwork for the creation of the Medicinal Cannabis Authority.
Three years later, the Authority was officially launched, an event hailed as «an important step forward in terms of health, economic growth, and social justice.».
A dual mission
L’Medical Cannabis Authority, which is now operational, is headed by the Cannabis Council and chaired by Ms. Jihan Williams-Knight. According to Ms. Williams-Knight, the Authority’s role goes beyond mere regulation: it is also responsible for public education and protection against abuse.
«Our job, as the authority responsible for medical cannabis, is to navigate these legal nuances, address public health concerns, and dispel negative stigmas to ensure that access to medical cannabis is clear, transparent, and never denied without a valid reason,» she explained.
Patients over the age of 21 will soon be able to obtain medical cannabis as part of a comprehensive regulatory system. The Medicinal Cannabis Authority will exempt members of the Rastafari community, who has long been an advocate for cannabis rights and spiritual recognition.
«This is not just about creating an institution, but about a commitment to equity, respect, and historical recognition,» emphasized Agriculture Minister Samal Duggins.
