Jean Castex opposes the legalization of cannabis
«No.» That's the clear, unambiguous answer from the Prime Minister, when asked about the possibility of allowing recreational cannabis in France. Jean Castex was last night's guest on The meeting is yours, a one-hour live broadcast on Twitch, hosted by journalist Samuel Étienne.
«Personally, I'm not in favor. I've seen too much - as a mayor - of the damage it causes. So, there again, health comes first. So I think it's a false good idea».
The Prime Minister was then asked to comment on the difference in treatment between cannabis, alcohol and cigarettes. «With tobacco and alcohol, there are regular warnings about abuse. And I wouldn't put them on the same level, from the point of view of health risks».», says Jean Castex.
« In reality, the dangers of alcohol and the risk of addiction are greater than those of cannabis, nuances the MP (LREM) Caroline Janvier, reached today by Newsweed. There is a scientific consensus on this subject, which doesn't mean that cannabis is without danger. I'm proposing to the government that we send them our report on recreational cannabis in mid-April.«
Presidential election 2022
The head of government's stance comes at a time when several political leaders are calling for the law to be relaxed. And it's no coincidence, given that the 2022 presidential election is just a year away.
Right-wing mayors sign tribune in favor of legalization, as well as mayors of Paris suburbs. At national level, The French National Assembly is conducting a fact-finding mission on the use of cannabis with members from all political parties.
Within the government, right-wing ministers such as Gérald Darmanin or the head of the government, Jean Castex, are more cautious on the subject. «Jean Castex and Gérald Darmanin's position is very clear. It's consistent. But that doesn't mean that in 2022, the debate won't be the same.», says Caroline Janvier.

In your opinion, has Sarkozy's right-wing asked the opinion of other elected representatives in order to impose an anti-democratic prohibition regime on us? NO!
So there's no reason why the virtuous elected representatives of legalization should seek the opinion of those who support the abomination of crime, trafficking and repression.
It seems to me that it's more a complaint and indictments (for non-assistance...) that they should be receiving, rather than giving their opinion, whose endless dismaying rhetoric we already know.
All in all, between polls 67% and citizen consultation 80%, the people's answer is clear and unambiguous: Prohibition is NO!
