Trump administration tackles recreational cannabis
States and localities that have approved the recreational use of cannabis can expect «more enforcement» under the Trump administration, according to a statement by White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.
President Trump reportedly understands how medical cannabis can alleviate patients« »pain and suffering,« but recreational cannabis use is »the last thing” the federal government should allow, according to Sean Spicer.
Spicer also attributes the U.S. opioid death epidemic to cannabis use.
«There’s a big difference between that and recreational cannabis, and I think when you look at something like the opioid addiction crisis spreading to more and more states in this country, the last thing you want to do is encourage people,» Spicer said.
«There is still a federal law that we need to take into account when it comes to recreational marijuana and other drugs of that kind.».
Cannabis is still illegal at the federal level, even though voters in eight states have approved the use and sale of cannabis for recreational purposes. Medical cannabis is also permitted. in 28 U.S. states. The Obama administration had agreed not to override state laws regarding recreational cannabis and to allow states to legalize recreational cannabis use if they so chose.
«I think you'll see more crackdowns,» Spicer said.
Spicer also explained that it would be up to the Department of Justice to decide how to proceed. Its new head, the Attorney General Jeff Sessions, opposes the legalization of cannabis and has even stated that «good people don’t smoke cannabis.».
The cannabis industry, along with pro-legalization advocates and some politicians, was quick to react and condemn these statements, particularly by pointing out the administration’s desire to let states legislate on certain issues—but not on cannabis.
