Germany: Demecan receives green light for medical cannabis production
Demecan, one of the three companies to have received a license to produce medical marijuana in Germany, but the only German one alongside Aurora and Tilray, has received EU-GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certification for its production facility located near Dresden, in Saxony.
EU-GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certification ensures the quality of medical products throughout the manufacturing process. It is issued independently by pharmaceutical authorities and now allows Demecan to produce cannabis-based «medicines.».
Dr. Adrian Fischer, a physician and CEO of Demecan, welcomed the announcement: «GMP certification is the strictest standard that manufacturers must meet, as pharmaceutical products are expected to be of the highest quality. The fact that we now hold this certificate is an extraordinary milestone in Demecan’s short history and an important step toward the development of a German cannabis hub in Saxony.»
The way is now clear for the first shipment of 100% medical cannabis flowers «Made in Germany.» The first flowers produced in Germany have already arrived at pharmacies, but were produced by Aphria / Tilray, a company originally from Canada. With GMP certification, Demecan will also be able to test the efficacy of medical cannabis through clinical trials.
Demecan plans to deliver its first cannabis flowers to the National Cannabis Agency and, through it, to pharmacies in the first quarter of 2022. The company was already supplying imported cannabis to German pharmacies, specifically a strain called Florestura (Super Haze x Amnesia) with 20% of THC, grown in Australia.
