Food and Drug Administration recognizes CBD as beneficial«
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration begins to recognize the benefits of cannabis. Indeed, the Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) has recognized the usefulness and effects of cannabidiol (CBD) and is launching an appeal to American citizens this Monday, August 14.
The association is therefore asking for more information on CBD and how the United Nations-supervised World Health Organization (WHO) should designate it under the 1971 Convention on psychotropic substances. In so doing, the FDA has recognized the beneficial effects of cannabidiol, particularly in patients suffering from neurological disorders.
Non-psychoactive cannabis recognized at federal level
U.S. citizens with information are invited to visit the U.S. website regulations.org to write comments regarding «abuse potential, actual abuse, medical usefulness, trafficking and the impact of planning changes on the availability for medical use of 17 medicinal substances» including CBD. The other substances included by the UN also include six types of fentanyl opioids five synthetic cannabinoid agonists and ketamine, a powerful psychoactive muscle relaxant.
Cannabidiol is therefore one of 17 substances currently under review by the WHO. However, this process only concerns the WHO and the United Nations. Anna K. Abram, the FDA deputy commissioner who sent the notice recognizing cannabidiol, says: «It has been shown to be beneficial in experimental models of several neurological disorders, including those of seizures and’epilepsy« .
Dr. Amanda Reiman, a member of the Cannabis Farmers Association explains, «I wish I felt more confident that this was a sign of the federal government finally getting closer to the medicinal value of cannabis. Everyone should have access to CBD, whether it's the plant or the medicine.»
The FDA will therefore be in charge of evaluating the substances considered by the UN, but federal government officials have stated that no recommendation will be provided to the UN as to whether these substances should undergo international controls.
