Eaze: the weed-delivery company that raised $10 million!
As the United States softens stance on marijuana legality, In a world where the environment is changing, start-ups are taking advantage of the resulting opportunities. Among the start-ups surfing the green wave, Eaze is the most talked-about:
- Dubbed the «Uber of weed,» Eaze is a medical marijuana delivery app that raised $10 million in venture capital funding in April 2015
- One of its best-known investors is none other than Snoop Dogg
This funding round is considered to be the highest in the marijuana business to date. With this money, San Francisco-based Eaze aims to expand throughout the United States, or at least all the states where the delivery of marijuana is legal, and improve its customer service as well as its core product, the app. The turf for Eaze: expand into all countries where the sale of medical or recreational marijuana is authorized.
This kind of fund-raising is a sign of maturity in the US cannabis industry. Investors see great potential and are confident about the market's growth prospects, which are in line with those imagined if the cannabis was legalized in France.
The fledgling app was created in July 2013 by Keith McCarty, then an employee of Yammer - an enterprise social network acquired for $1.4 billion by Microsoft in 2012. McCarty's starting point was simply the observation that the Bay Area, the Bay Area of San Fransisco in Northern California, didn't have an app for patients treated with medical cannabis. From now on, patients with an MMJ (medical marijuana) card can launch Eaze, choose from 8 types of weed the one best suited to their condition, the quantity and the amount, and have it delivered straight to their home, often in under 15 minutes, the timer being integrated into the app. Eaze is completely free for users, but dispensaries are charged by the leed. It also includes a number of services provided in partnership with Weedmaps.
In the demo video, we see a woman ordering her marijuana via her app. Shortly afterwards, a well-dressed and smiling deliveryman arrives, with weed in his hand.
This simplicity is made possible by the many contacts the company has forged with weed dispensaries, and the recruitment of independent delivery drivers.
McCarty often stresses that neither Eaze nor its employees are in direct contact with the product.
Eaze is clearly in a buoyant market - we've already seen the app Nugg to do virtually the same thing. Competitors such as Nestdrop, on the other hand, have been forced to close due to legal wrangling with the City of Los Angeles. To avoid this, Eaze works with the best legal advisors in the field to evangelize the law - or its partners like Apple - and develop their business legally.
And we've no doubt that with its freshly acquired 10 million $$$, Eaze will be able to grow very fast, and faster than its potential competitors.
