Study: Epilepsy in children and CBD and THC dosage
A Canadian study recently investigated cannabis dosages and dosages to reduce seizures in children with severe epilepsy. The research involved seven children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, for whom the drugs normally used for this medical condition did not work.
The researchers concluded that «children with drug-resistant epilepsy may find relief with medical cannabis oil containing both CBD and a reduced dose of THC. The oil, which contains 95% of CBD and 5% of THC, can reduce or prevent epileptic seizures in people with epileptic encephalopathy.».
Dr. Richard Huntsman, professor at the University of Saskatchewan and director of the research, was enthusiastic when the team revealed the results of the study: «What makes these results really exciting is that they are becoming a treatment option for children who have not responded to traditional medications.».
The researchers state that they found «no evidence of THC intoxication when using whole plant extracts enriched with CBD», and that at low doses the children did not feel the narcotic effects of cannabis.
Three of the seven children in the study stopped having seizures completely during the course of the research. One of them had had 1,223 seizures in the month prior to the start of the study, despite taking anti-seizure medication on a regular basis.
Parents are relieved by the research results. The mother of one of the participants pointed out that her son could sometimes have 150 seizures a day, hampering his development and dynamism. After all other treatments had failed, this experimental clinical trial was for her «a last resort» for her son.
D’further research had previously demonstrated the efficacy of CBD in reducing epileptic seizures in people with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
