What is Dinafem's legacy to Silent Seeds?
Although Silent Seeds is a brand-new seed bank, it follows in the footsteps of Dinafem, the first feminized seed bank in Spain. At the end of the 90s, the peninsula saw the development of a strong cannabis industry capable of competing with that of the Netherlands. In particular, it developed new types of seeds such as AutoFem, autoflowering and feminized seeds that were exported all over the world.
A look back at the history of a Spanish seed bank that was at the forefront of European cannabis, then spread around the world and gave Silent Seeds its strength.
The birth of Dinafem
Dinafem was born in 2005 from the union of several growers and breeders. These people had already been growing, experimenting and creating new varieties since the late 80s, and were obviously working on creating the best genetics, the most exclusive and delicate to work with at the time.
Around 2001, these people realized that some of the varieties they had produced were far better than many of those in circulation via existing Dutch seed banks. They decided it was time to set up their own seed bank.
Dinafem highlights
Dinafem, for Feminized Dynamics, is best known for having been a pioneer in the sale of feminized seeds
To obtain these precious seeds, Dinafem has always worked with elite clones, nurtured in climate-controlled indoor rooms and ventilated to maximize the pollination process while avoiding cross-pollination.
To obtain a feminized seed, Dinafem has crossed female plant clones with other female plant clones. To do this, one of the female plants is sexed so that it can produce pollen, then the receiving female plant is pollinated. Both plants are female, and both give female XX genes to their offspring.

Dinafem Critical
The main advantage of feminized seeds is the guarantee that the resulting plant will be female, so that the grower doesn't have to waste time and energy on a male plant that will have to be eliminated later. What's more, with a homogeneous feminized population, the grower doesn't have to worry about unwanted pollination, which guarantees high-quality floral results.
When feminized seeds first appeared in the 2000s, some presented problems of quality and sexual instability, with many hermaphroditic plants. Dinafem has been able to solve this problem and come up with stable seeds that have the potential to produce truly 99.9% female cannabis plants.
Dinafem's first seed catalog included Power Kush, California Hashplant, Blue Hash, White Widow, Blue Widow, Critical+ and later the Moby Dick, These are the varieties that have given rise to all the legendary creations that have followed.
Other companies followed, and eventually feminized seeds gained in popularity until they became the norm rather than the exception, to the point where they relegated regular seeds to a market share of just 10%.
In 2009, the company began researching the development and stabilization of new feminized autoflowering varieties, which also had a very bad reputation at the time. Roadrunner was the first and, as has happened with feminized varieties, Dinafem's autoflowering seeds have also been a huge success, making these little plants very popular and productive. Especially with their latest Auto XXL collection, whose plants are more akin to a photoperiod variety, so large are they, and with XXL production for the category.

Dinafem's Moby Dick
Dinafem has also done a lot for the development of CBD varieties. The company realized the potential of these low- to non-psychotropic strains early on, and took a gamble on this cannabinoid by starting an intense selection process. Legendary genetics were crossed with an elite line of pure CBD and, as analysis progressed, several varieties with cannabinoid ratios in favour of CBD were stabilized. Some have retained the original taste and flavor properties of the strains on which they are based, such as OG Kush CBD, but with more CBD than THC.
The first CBD-rich strains appeared in their catalog back in 2015: Critical Mass CBD, Shark Shock CBD and Moby Dick CBD. In 2017, Dinafem launched Dinamed CBD, Dinafem Seeds' first non-psychoactive strain, is launched with 15 % of CBD and 1 % of THC.
With the legalization of hemp in the USA in 2018, Dinafem was one of the first European seed banks to export its seeds for the hemp sector, with Bubba Kush Hemp, a -0.3% THC variety derived from a cross with Bubba Kush CBD.
In 2020, Dinafem introduced its CBD flower brand, which was developed in collaboration with the Italian THCBD association. 3 different varieties were created for the Italian market, with THC levels below 0.5 %, the maximum level in Italy.

THCBD by Dinafem
With the growing popularity of American varieties in Europe, Dinafem had to cross the Atlantic to see what was going on! Already in 2011, Dinafem's catalog was expanded to include popular American cannabis strains. OG Kush, Dinachem, Bubba Kush and Purple Afghan Kush offered opportunities that had seemed impossible for the Spanish seed bank. Then Sour Diesel, Cookies, Gorilla... were released, and Dinafem not only manufactured the feminized version of these strains, but also autoflowering and other versions.
The American adventure thus gave rise to the Humboldt range by Dinafem and the collaborations with local breeders such as Sherbinski.
Dinafem rewards
Since its creation in 2005, Dinafem has distinguished itself by the high quality and reliability of its cannabis seeds. Dinafem strains have won awards and distinctions at Cannabis Cups around the world and from readers of specialist magazines:
- In 2010, readers of Soft Secrets voted Moby Dick «Girl of the Year 2010». She is the first non-Dutch variety to win this award.
- Dinafem wins best seed bank award at Expogrow 2013
- In 2015, Bubba Kush won 1st place at the Copa Cannabis for the best outdoor strain.
- Remo Chemo, an indica with 20% THC, is listed among the 10 best strains of 2017 by High Times magazine.
- and many more...
The rest of the adventure...
In September 2020, a police intervention shocked the entire cannabis sector. Dinafem raided by police in several of its facilities, and found itself prosecuted for its seed business and communications, even though it had been operating openly in the sector for 15 years.
As we await the next step for the Dinafem entity, the plants have moved on and migrated to the Silent Seeds stable. So don't be surprised to find the same genetics 😉
