Research suggests potential link between cannabis and heart risk
A review of studies carried out by’American Heart Association, found that the consumption of cannabis can generate «interference with prescribed medications» and «trigger cardiovascular disorders or events, such as heart attacks and strokes.»
It recommends that patients at risk of cardiovascular events avoid or minimize cannabis use until further data are available.
«If people choose to use cannabis for its medicinal or recreational effects, oral and topical forms, for which doses can be measured, can reduce some of the potential harm,» a declared Robert Page, one of the study's scientists.
«It's also vitally important that people only use legal cannabis products, as there is no control over the quality or content of cannabis products sold on the street,» he added.
Some of the studies analyzed by the medical group revealed that heart rhythm abnormalities, such as tachycardia and atrial fibrillation, could occur within an hour of cannabis use. According to other studies THC can also cause a faster heart rate, increase the heart's oxygen requirements, disrupt artery walls and contribute to higher blood pressure in the supine position.
There is an «urgent» need for ‘carefully designed prospective short- and long-term studies of cannabis use and cardiovascular safety», added Robert Page.
In addition, the association recommends that cannabis be included in efforts to combat smoking and prevent Food and Drug Administration, a proposal in the direction of a recent bill introduced by a US Senator to legalize cannabis for adults.
