A project to legalize cannabis presented in Pennsylvania
A bill to legalize cannabis was introduced in Pennsylvania last week. This bipartisan bill would legalize the possession and retail sale of cannabis and includes provisions for cancellation for nonviolent criminal charges related to cannabis.
It would also enable law enforcement to prosecute driving under the influence, eradicate illicit markets, and prohibit the sale of cannabis to children. Requirements regarding cannabis use in the workplace would also be established for all employees acting in good faith.
In a statement, Senator Dan Laughlin, the sponsor of the bill, said, «The legalization of adult cannabis use is supported by an overwhelming majority of Pennsylvanians, and this legislation achieves that goal while ensuring safety and social equity.»
«With the neighboring countries of the New Jersey and New York »Those who have legalized adult use—we have a duty to Pennsylvania taxpayers to legalize adult use of marijuana in order to avoid losing hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenue and thousands of new jobs.".
The bill also takes social equity into account and includes provisions to grant licenses to applicants from socially and economically disadvantaged groups to sell cannabis, while allowing room for new and existing licensees to ensure that demand in Pennsylvania is met, according to Dan Laughlin.
In light of Joe Biden's announcement, which called on the states to expunge the convictions In addition to previous cannabis-related convictions, Bill 846 would also allow for the expungement of nonviolent cannabis-related convictions for all such convictions.
Sharif Street added: « »We have a unique and unprecedented opportunity to correct decades of mass incarceration, disproportionate law enforcement targeting marginalized communities, the criminalization of personal choices, and the perpetuation of violence—all of which stem from the failure of the war on drugs.”
«Legalizing adult cannabis use will help us fully and equitably fund education, reduce property taxes, and address a variety of community needs throughout Pennsylvania.»
