NFL takes a close look at medical cannabis for players
Changing attitudes toward cannabis across the United States could have a rapid impact on the National Football League (NFL).
The NFL Players Association is actively exploring the use of medical cannabis as an alternative to the opioids typically prescribed for pain management. It is also expected to establish a committee soon to closely examine this issue, among others.
George Atallah, Deputy Executive Director of External Affairs, also made a point of clarifying that this committee «will study pain management among NFL players» and will in no way be a «cannabis committee.».
Yes. It's a committee that will examine pain management for NFL players, not a marijuana committee. A subtle but important distinction… https://t.co/aMJajHeZLP

This announcement comes two days after 4 states have legalized the recreational use of cannabis and 4 others have legalized its therapeutic use. A total of 29 states now allow the use of cannabis for medical purposes, and 8 states allow recreational cannabis use. Of these 29 states, 14 are home to an NFL team. Colorado and Washington, home to the Broncos and the Seahawks, respectively, legalized recreational cannabis as early as 2012.
Many NFL players are now seeking permission to use cannabis to treat their pain. Common opioids are highly addictive, and some players never stop using them, even after their careers end. A player who tests positive for cannabis is subject to a fine and a suspension without pay.
With more than half of the United States having legalized the medical use of cannabis, a player can now legally treat himself at home but still be in violation of his team’s rules. Even broaching the subject can be problematic for a player and jeopardize his career. Eugene Monroe, who announced his retirement in July, didn't dare mention it until much later.
Cannabidiol, or CBD, an anti-inflammatory compound extracted from the cannabis plant, could potentially help athletes cope with one of the most pressing issues: concussions. CBD has been shown to be effective as a neuroprotective agent when taken one or two hours before playing, according to Lester Grinspoon, professor emeritus at Harvard and one of the pioneers in cannabis research.
The NFL says it is listening to «medical and scientific experts» on the use of cannabis as a means of managing pain, but has yet to reach an internal consensus on the issue. If the experts recommend a change, the NFL has stated that it is prepared to discuss the matter with the NFL Players Association.
