Georgia decriminalizes cannabis use
The Constitutional Court of Georgia decided on Thursday that it was unconstitutional to prosecute someone for cannabis consumption.
This decriminalization de facto does not affect existing penalties for buying or selling cannabis, but allows its consumption.
«Cannabis consumption was decriminalized today,» said Iago Khvichia, a lawyer for Girchi, a Georgian political party in favor of ending cannabis prohibition. «It will soon be decided whether consumption will be legalized,» he added.
This decision by the Constitutional Court is the latest in a long line. In July of this year, In its decision, the Court ruled that the cultivation and possession of cannabis from this harvest, with a limit of 151 grams, was not a criminal offence.
The Constitutional Court's decision will now go to Parliament to be passed into law.
