Cronos acquires CanAdelaar
The Canadian group Cronos announced the acquisition of CanAdelaar, probably the most important producer in the Wietexperiment, the Dutch legal cannabis cultivation program for coffeeshops. An operation valued at 67 million dollars in cash, with an additional payment mechanism based on the producer's performance in 2026 and 2027.
With this acquisition, Cronos, 41% is owned by Altria (ex-Philip Morris), securing a leading position in what the company describes as «the largest adult-use cannabis market in Europe» - a strategic turning point for a group already established in Canada and Israel.
CanAdelaar, industrial pillar of the Wietexperiment
Founded in 2018 and licensed since 2023, CanAdelaar is a key player in the Wietexperiment, the pilot program set up by the Netherlands to establish a legal, closed supply chain in ten municipalities.
The company operates from a 5 hectares à Voorne aan Zee, combining greenhouse cultivation, processing, packaging and distribution. With a yield of around 20,000 kg of dried flowers per year, This makes it the only industrial-scale producer among the ten licensees.
Thanks to this capability, CanAdelaar now supplies almost all 72 coffee shops integrated into the pilot program, with a catalog comprising flowers, pre-rolls, hashish and edibles. Between 2024 and September 2025, sales rose from 17.7 million à 47.3 million dollars, for a EBITDA from 28.2 million.
A market in full structuring in the Netherlands
The Wietexperiment, officially launched on April 7, 2025, marks a major break in Dutch politics. After decades of tolerance, the authorities are now testing an entirely regulated, This is the first time that a coffee shop in one of the ten municipalities has to source exclusively from ten licensed producers.
In addition to tighter health controls, the framework requires :
- a ban on importing or exporting products
- ban on sales between producers
- the obligation for coffee shops to leave the grey market once and for all.
Although limited to eleven cities - and Amsterdam is not included - the pilot market covers 72 of 562 coffee shops of the country, already offering a unique testing ground in Europe. The hypothesis of a national expansion is regularly raised, which would further strengthen the scope of the acquisition made by Cronos.

If over 75% of sales flower, the Wietexperiment also authorizes the production of edibles, vapes, pre-rolled and hash, opening the door to Cronos' advanced product portfolio and possible innovations for Dutch adult consumers.
By acquiring CanAdelaar, With this transaction, Cronos acquires a fast-growing company with the largest market share in the pilot program, and an advantageous cost position thanks to its industrial greenhouse cultivation. The transaction, approved by the Cronos Board of Directors, is expected to close in early 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
