Sanity Group is one of continental Europe's leading cannabis companies. Founded in Berlin in 2018 by Finn Hänsel and Fabian Friede, it has established itself in just a few years as the leading medical cannabis company in Germany, before expanding into Switzerland, the UK and other European markets.
Finn Hänsel and Fabian Friede created Sanity Group in 2018, in a German context still largely closed to recreational cannabis but already open to medical cannabis since 2017. Their positioning was clear from the outset: to develop pharmaceutical and wellness cannabinoid products, distributed via medical channels: pharmacies, doctors, hospitals.
The company quickly structured two complementary branches: Sanatio Pharma, dedicated to the import, distribution and development of medical cannabis in Germany, and VAAY, a consumer brand of CBD wellness products.
In February 2020, Sanity Group completes the largest cannabis fundraising in Europe at the time: €20 million in Serie A, led by Calyx and HV Holtzbrinck Ventures. Notable investors include Casa Verde Capital (Snoop Dogg's fund) and TQ Ventures (Justin Bieber's manager Scooter Braun's fund).
In September 2022, British American Tobacco acquired a minority stake, a strong signal of the tobacco giants' interest in the cannabis market.
In June 2024, NASDAQ-listed Canadian producer Organigram invests 14 million euros for a minority stake, as part of a strategic supply agreement.
With around 10% of the German medical cannabis market, Sanity Group distributes its products via over 2,000 pharmacies working with around 5,000 doctors in Germany. Its avaay medical brand holds the second position in the German market, with accelerated growth since the partial legalization of recreational cannabis in Germany in April 2024, which generated a 30 to 50% increase in medical prescriptions.
Sanity Group participates in the pilot program for the controlled sale of recreational cannabis in the Swiss canton of Basel-Landschaft via its brand Grashaus Project, with an operational sales outlet and plans for expansion in the Swiss retail sector.
In the UK, Sanity Group entered into a partnership in 2024 with Curaleaf Laboratories to develop new medical cannabis formulations for UK prescribers, with the first products expected in the first quarter of 2026.
In 2025, Sanity Group finalizes a major strategic agreement with Organigram: the company is valued at up to 250 million euros, with 130 million euros paid upfront and up to a further 120 million conditional on performance until March 2027. Finn Hänsel confirms that the company will continue to focus on the pharmaceutical segment and pharmacy distribution.
