‘t Ooievaartje
‘T Ooievaartje was located just behind Central Station, in Amsterdam’s less crowded Noord neighborhood. The surrounding area is primarily residential, making it significantly quieter. Many streets are lined with historic apartment buildings and small houses. There are also plenty of shops, including some real local gems. It’s a great place to wander around.
The name of this café translates into French as «La petite Cigogne.» ‘T Ooievaartje actually takes its name from the street where it’s located. However, this café takes its connection to birds very seriously. As soon as you walk in, you’re immersed in a tropical jungle atmosphere. Paintings cover every inch of the walls—and even the ceiling! The artwork is truly impressive.
At the back of the store, you’ll find the smoking lounge. Here, an unusual feature sets Ooievaartje apart from virtually every other establishment in the city. ‘T Ooievaartje has dovecotes built into the building, with clear Plexiglas windows that let you see right inside the birdcages. Watching the birds once the effects of cannabis kick in can be fascinating. Just avoid tapping on the windows.
