The Exit Drug: how cannabis could help the US out of its opioid crisis
Americans account for only 5% of the world's population but consume 80% of the world's legal opioids, which currently cause 115 deaths per day in the United States.
The documentary The Exit Drug, created by Weedmaps, is studying the role cannabis could play in ending this opioid crisis.
According to neuroscientist Adie Wilson-Poe, who appears in the documentary, cannabis has the potential to significantly improve public health by reducing the use of opioids.
The Exit Drug explores the progression of opioid addiction, from initial use (typically following an injury) to relapse, and how cannabis might reduce harm and promote health. For these patients, cannabis could serve as a «gateway drug» away from opioids, helping them overcome their addiction.
