Canada: second cannabis microculture license awarded in Ontario
To break the cannabis production hegemony of big companies like Aurora Cannabis or Canopy Growth, Canada has begun issuing micro-cultivation licenses to allow the production of small batches of cannabis in a limited area. This makes it «easier» for small producers to get started.
Hearst Organic Cannabis Products was the second company to apply for a micro-production license, the first being in British Columbia.
Joël Lacelle, one of the co-owners, says: «In terms of quality, I think we'll be able to produce a better product in the smaller greenhouses.
Their greenhouse is 200 square meters, the maximum allowed by the micro-culture program.
The two owners have allayed the fears of local residents, who viewed the arrival of cannabis production so close to home with suspicion. The two business partners have already signed contracts with distributors, and all their production will be exported within the country, mainly to Western Canada. According to one of the owners, the company should produce 600 kilograms of dried cannabis per year.
For the time being, the micro-business will provide work for the two men and one of the wives. They may plan to expand in the future, although this would require a change of license, and therefore of status. They may also take on new staff, should the expansion come to fruition.
