Woody Harrelson has long been a supporter of cannabis law reform. He has previously participated in the Seattle Hempfest, and was even arrested for trying to plant cannabis seeds.
The actor—and cannabis advocate—was among the 66 people who applied to open one of the first cannabis dispensaries in Hawaii, specifically in Honolulu County, under the name of her company, Simple Organic Living.
The Hawaii Department of Health has posted the list of 66 applicants on its website. The state is now reviewing the applications for the licenses, which will be issued in April.
The Businessman Henk Rogers, well known to Tetris fans, also applied with his company Blue Planet Foundation, who advocates for energy independence at the state level. In fact, he already lives in Hawaii in a house powered entirely by solar energy.
If selected, applicants must pay $1 million in cash before becoming official license candidates, plus 100,000$ for each planned dispensary. All applicants must have resided in Hawaii for more than 5 years.
Under a law passed in 2015, the government will issue eight licenses for medical cannabis dispensaries. The The law authorizes medical cannabis businesses to have two production centers and two dispensaries on the island, for a total of 16 statewide. Six are planned for Oahu, four for the island of Hawaii, four for Maui, and two for Kauai.
The clinics are expected to open in July.
Hawaii was the first state to legalize medical cannabis through the legislative process 16 years ago. Lawmakers are currently considering legalizing recreational cannabis, although it's unlikely to happen this year.
