Legalization of cannabis: the issue continues to be debated in Marseille
In Marseille, the issue of cannabis legalization is an old cliché that resurfaces during election season or whenever a settling of scores results in casualties. 150 prominent figures from Marseille had called for legalization in January 2017 in an op-ed in the JDD, ahead of the presidential elections. Should it then be legalized, or should prohibition continue? In a video posted on Facebook by FranceInfo, residents were surveyed on the issue of legalization.
Recurring themes fall within the realm of health. In fact, a resident of Marseille says she is against cannabis because it is a matter of «protecting teenagers» and that this may be dangerous for 15-year-olds. Another resident, however, supports legalization, explaining that cannabis is just as bad as fatty foods because it’s not good for your health.
These two residents advocate for sound ideas regarding cannabis. Legalization should be accompanied by safety and prevention measures. Just like sugar, alcohol, or tobacco, moderation is key. Especially since tobacco and alcohol are more harmful than cannabis and kills more quickly.
Another issue that’s gaining traction: The cost of the fight against cannabis. In the city of Marseille, the war on cannabis is costly, and prisons «are bursting at the seams.» »20% of police activity in Marseille is due to the war on cannabis.» Furthermore, last week, the city’s law enforcement officers noticed that drug dealers in the Cité des Oliviers were transporting narcotics in suitcases. They found the equivalent of 12 kilograms of cannabis resin and 60 grams of cocaine in these suitcases. This battle appears to be an ongoing one in Marseille.
What the Candidates for the Legislative Elections Think
In the run-up to the legislative elections, Solange Biaggi (Les Républicains), Jeanne Marti (FN), Jean-Luc Mélenchon (La France Insoumise), Patrick Mennucci (PS), and Corinne Versini (En Marche!) came together last week for an hour-long debate on France 3’s regional channel to exchange ideas and discuss their plans for addressing local issues and citizens’ concerns across several topics, including the legalization of cannabis.

«Laws»… are meant to be circumvented, twisted… you know what I mean!
C.b.d. smoking legalized in Swiss tobacconists....where «C.b.d. oil« is not illegal at all....
I believe that on the Swiss website «CANNALIZ.CH» it is now possible to buy dried C.b.d. flowers for Europe, so for France too... (they contain less than 0.2% of t.h.c. so they are non-psychoactive with all the benefits of C.b.d.... like C.b.d. oil), a crack in the wall?
French hypocrisy... forbidding suppliers and retailers to sell... but not us to buy where it's legal...
