Israel opens its medical cannabis export licenses
After many twists and turns, Israeli cannabis growers will finally be able to export medical cannabis. The country hopes export $1 billion worth of cannabis per year.
«This is an important milestone for Israeli exporters and industry, which will both expand export opportunities and grow employment in Israel,» said declared Economy Minister Eli Cohen.
To make exports operational, Eli Cohen had to ensure that cannabis exports would not jeopardize the national supply of medical cannabis for patients who are prescribed it.
Medical cannabis exports were announced in 2018, then suspended, then re-announced and blocked pending this latest opening. Non-commercial exports in the meantime, In particular, to have Israeli products approved by foreign regulatory bodies with a view to future commercial exports.
The new order will come into force in 30 days, which should give exporters time to apply for a license from the Ministry of Health.
Israel has more than 10 farms and five indoor production plants that meet export standards. Some of them have already signed agreements to sell cannabis in Europe and Canada.
