Israel: a study will attempt to treat COVID+ patients with cannabis

Ichilov Medical Center in Tel Aviv is set to launch a new study to examine whether the CBD (cannabidiol) may slow the inflammatory response that accompanies the deterioration of severely ill COVID-19 patients and alleviate coronavirus symptoms. Doctors are therefore seeking to use cannabis’s antiviral properties to slow the spread of the virus.

The study will be conducted in collaboration with several hospital departments and is expected to recruit several dozen patients with the coronavirus whose symptoms remain moderate.

Dr. Barak Cohen, chief anesthesiologist and head of coronavirus management at Ichilov Hospital, emphasizes that «it is an innovative approach to treating certain symptoms with a cannabis ingredient considered safe and non-addictive.»

While there is currently no evidence that the Does cannabis cure or protect against the coronavirus?, the number of patients who smoke is lower than expected. However, these patients are at greater risk of developing a severe form of the coronavirus according to several studies.
