Indiana on track to legalize medical cannabis?
Indiana could soon join the majority of U.S. states by legalizing medical cannabis.
Governor Mike Braun’s recent comments reflect growing public support for cannabis reform, both within the state and nationwide. According to a recent poll, nearly 9 out of 10 Native Americans support the legalization of medical cannabis.
There is widespread public support for medical cannabis
A recent survey by the Ball State University revealed that 87 % of Indiana residents support some form of medical marijuana legalization. Among them, 62 % also support the legalization of cannabis use by adults, bringing it in line with national trends.
Medical cannabis is already legal in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky, the four states bordering Indiana. Three of these states also permit cannabis for adult use, which makes Indiana an increasingly isolated state in terms of its policies.
Mike Braun, who will soon transition from the role of U.S. senator who is running for governor of Indiana, has always been open to the legalization of medical cannabis. During his campaign for the governor's office, he emphasized the importance of striking a balance between public support and the views of law enforcement.
«It’s probably time for medical cannabis to find its place in Indiana,» Mr. Braun told WEHT-TV, adding that the state could draw inspiration from the approaches used by more than 30 other countries that have implemented medical cannabis programs.
Braun has previously linked medical cannabis to the topics of freedom of choice and free markets, arguing that states should have the autonomy to make such decisions. Although his track record at the Senate members voice support for the reform cannabis; he has not co-sponsored any legislation to advance the cause.
His recent remarks, however, suggest a renewed focus on prioritizing the public’s call for reform in Indiana.
Wider calls for legalization
Efforts to reform cannabis laws in Indiana are not limited to medical use. Safe and Regulated Indiana, a advocacy group led by Joe Elsener, the former head of the state Republican Party, is campaigning for comprehensive cannabis policies. Mr. Elsener says that’well-regulated legalization could improve the public health, the safety and economic opportunities.
«Indiana voters strongly support legalizing marijuana for adults over the age of 21, as well as taxing and regulating it in the same way as alcohol,» said Mr. Elsener.
Supporters of these measures believe they could make safer streets, disrupt illegal markets and increase the tax receipts from the State.
