CBD and THC reveal new potential against ovarian cancer cells
New laboratory research suggests that two cannabinoids well-known CBD and the THC, could play a role in the future treatment of ovarian cancer, one of the most deadly gynecological malignancies.
The results, published in Frontiers in Pharmacology, The results of a study carried out in the United States and Canada indicate significant inhibition of cancer cell growth when the two compounds are used together, while sparing healthy cells to a large extent.
Although these results remain preliminary and limited to experiments in vitro, These results, the researchers claim, offer promising prospects for the development of alternative therapies that may be less toxic than current treatments.
A cancer that remains difficult to treat
The ovarian cancer is notoriously difficult to diagnose at an early stage, and is often resistant to standard chemotherapy, particularly platinum-based drugs. These factors contribute to high recurrence rates and an unfavorable overall prognosis for many patients.
«Ovarian cancer remains one of the deadliest gynecological tumors, characterized by late diagnosis, high recurrence rates and limited effective treatment options,» said Dr Siyao Tong of Khon Kaen University, lead author of the study.
Faced with the urgent need for new therapeutic strategies, the research team turned to the CBD (cannabidiol) and the THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), compounds that have already demonstrated anticancer activity in other tumor models.
How can CBD and the THC act on cancer cells
The scientists have tested the CBD, the THC and a combination of the two on two separate ovarian cancer cell lines: one platinum-sensitive, the other platinum-resistant. A third healthy cell line was also exposed to the compounds to assess their potential toxicity.
The CBD and the THC both individually reduced the ability of cancer cells to reproduce, leading to a reduction in the number and size of colonies. However, the most striking results came when the two compounds were combined.
«It's worth noting that the inhibitory effect was more pronounced when CBD and THC were used in a 1:1 ratio,» Tong explained.
The two compounds thus prevented cancer cells from reproducing, and their combination proved highly effective in killing existing cancer cells. The researchers suggest that CBD and the THC may act through complementary mechanisms, amplifying their respective effects when used together.
Blocking metastases and key signaling pathways
In addition to the limitation of cell growth, further tests showed that the CBD-THC combination considerably reduced the cancer cell migration. This is a crucial discovery, because the metastases are responsible for many cancer-related deaths of the ovary.
«These results highlight that combined CBD:THC treatment effectively inhibited the growth and invasion of ovarian cancer cells.»
At the molecular level, the team focused on the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, which is often over-activated in ovarian cancer and linked to tumor progression and drug resistance. Treatment with CBD and THC seemed to restore a more normal regulation of this pathway, which explains both the reduction in proliferation and the increase in cancer cell death.
It is important to note that healthy cells were only slightly affected by these compounds, which suggests a potentially better than conventional chemotherapy.
Promises tempered by obvious limitations
Despite these encouraging data, the researchers point out that the study is still in its infancy. All experiments have been conducted in vitro, This means that the results do not necessarily reflect the behavior of tumors in living organisms.
«Although our study is still preliminary, it lays an important foundation for future research into the potential applications of CBD and THC in the treatment of ovarian cancer,» said Tong.
He also emphasized the need for animal studies, Pharmacokinetic data must be collected and regulatory frameworks carefully examined before any clinical application.
For the time being, this research joins a growing number of scientific publications exploring the cannabinoids beyond the symptom management, positioning the CBD and the THC as interesting compounds in the ongoing search for more effective and better-tolerated cancer treatments.

It's exciting to see science confirm the potential of the entourage effect (CBD/THC) on such serious pathologies. These in vitro results are a ray of hope for the development of more targeted, less toxic therapies. Further proof that hemp is a therapeutic resource that is still under-exploited.
