Final votes confirm that New Zealand will not legalize cannabis
Final results released by the New Zealand government on Friday morning confirm that voters have rejected the referendum to legalize cannabis.
Polling stations closed on October 17, but New Zealand did not complete its count until it had received the «special votes», which include the votes of New Zealand citizens living abroad, and which accounted for 17% of the vote.
The 480,000 or so remaining votes didn't push the needle far enough in favor of reform, but narrowed the gap between votes for and against. The referendum ended with a 48.4% in favor to 50.7% against, while preliminary results for october 30 was 46.1% for and 53.1% against.
The government project was to allow adults aged 20 and over to buy, possess and consume cannabis, and to grow up to 2 plants. It would also have authorized the creation of cannabis consumption sites.
