Puerto Rico legalizes medical cannabis

The Puerto Rico Department of Health has passed a provision that will allow the cultivation, processing and distribution of medical cannabis in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico.

Its representatives confirm that the substance can be used in the form of pills, creams, patches and oral drops. Authorities stress that smoking cannabis and growing it for personal use remain illegal.

The Department of Health announced last Thursday that it will implement a tracking system from seed to sale. It will also issue licenses to doctors and private companies wishing to cultivate and process medical cannabis. Samples will have to be sent to independent laboratories to certify that they contain the right levels of THC and are free from contaminants.

The Secretary of Public Affairs, Jesus Manuel Ortiz, confirmed that the system should be in place by the end of the year.
