Oregon issues its first psilocybin production license
Last week, the Oregon authorities issued the first commercial license for the state psilocybin therapy program.
The licensee, Satori Farms PDX LLC, has received authorization to manufacture psilocybin products from the’Oregon Psilocybin Services - a branch of the’Oregon Health Authority - last Wednesday.
Oregon's psilocybin medical program was officially launched last January, after voters approved the system in the 2020 election.
Psilocybin, a psychedelic substance found in certain mushrooms, known as «magic mushrooms», has proved to be a highly potent and effective treatment. promising treatment for severe depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, end-of-life anxiety in the terminally ill and certain mental disorders. Although the substance remains federally banned, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted psilocybin mushrooms «breakthrough therapy» status for major depressive disorders in 2018, leading to clinical trials.
L’Oregon Psilocybin Services warned that the program could be slow to get off the ground, as regulators must first review applications for four different types of license: production, analytics, service centers and facilitators.
The beginning of the month also marked the completion of Portland-based InnerTrek's first-ever psilocybin training program, which teaches students how to accompany psilocybin patients during their psychedelic experiences.
Earlier this month, Oregon psychedelic medicine advocates launched the Psychedelic Medicine PAC, a new political action committee designed to support election candidates in favor of the therapeutic use of psychedelics.
