Decriminalize
Reduce the penalties associated with a crime. Decriminalization generally reclassifies cannabis possession from a felony or misdemeanor to a civil offense. Thus, the decriminalization of non-medical cannabis removes the threat of arrest for possession of small amounts of cannabis.
What does decriminalization mean?
The decriminalization of drug use, and more specifically of cannabis, means that the possession and use of small amounts of cannabis for recreational purposes will not result in a criminal charge and/or a potential prison sentence. Instead, possession of cannabis may constitute a civil offense generally punishable by a fine.
What is the difference between decriminalization and legalization?
The difference between decriminalization and legalization lies in the legal classifications and the penalties associated with each. When cannabis is legalized in a municipality, the possession or consumption of a certain amount of cannabis in accordance with the law carries no legal consequences. In contrast, when cannabis has been decriminalized, offenders are subject to a fine if found in possession of cannabis.
