Autoflowering cannabis seeds: everything you need to know about their history and how they work
This type of seed has recently appeared on the market. In this regard, both consumers and distributors are struck by how quickly it has established itself in an industry where it has been operating for less than ten years.
Among the reasons that may have contributed to the preference for producers of this type of cannabis seed, the following can be cited:
- Its natural origins: genetics derived from a Russian plant called Ruderalis
Autoflowering seeds were developed about ten years ago by a Canadian breeder who, by replicating the genetic behavior of plants that germinate in cold countries such as Russia, succeeded in growing cannabis seeds in a very short time and without needingas much sunlight as they’re used to.
Before this discovery, he had already observed how these plants from Eastern Europe—known as Ruderalis, which literally means «rubble»—grew almost everywhere without needing much sunlight. Ruderalis were initially considered a type of weed until it was discovered that their powerful genetics could be used to create something particularly useful for cannabis growers.
- The researchers' great dedication to improving seeds and plants.
However, the first plants grown from autoflowering seeds had the drawback of not growing very tall: they were too small to be profitable.
From that point on, research focused on growing larger plants from autoflowering seeds, and within a short time, plants reaching heights of up to three meters were produced.
However, despite this rapid success, research has not stopped and continues today to explore new flavors and develop cannabis plants that are even more resistant to pests and diseases.
- Its quality, price, and performance
Plants grown from autoflowering seeds are of the same quality as those grown from feminized seeds. Their market price is also very competitive, and their excellent results are undeniable:
– It is a plant that can withstand more extreme conditions (both too much and too little light).
– As we mentioned, they are more resistant to potential pests and diseases associated with cannabis plants.
– They can grow quite large and produce more than one harvest per season. Although they produce plants that cannot reproduce, unlike plants grown from feminized seeds, they do not die once they have been harvested. This fact, combined with their rapid germination and growth and the ability to plant them at any time of year, is what makes it possible to harvest more than once per season.
For all these reasons, they are perfect plants for beginners and have become so popular in today's market.
