Bermuda: Parliament approves the decriminalization of cannabis
On December 8, the Parliament of Bermuda a approuvé the decriminalization of small quantities of cannabis.
The amendment to the Misuse of Drugs Act, the law regulating drug use in this island country, will decriminalize possession of up to 7 grams of cannabis.
Law enforcement will still be authorized to seize any amount of cannabis, but possession of less than 7 grams will no longer result in criminal prosecution, unless there is evidence of smuggling.
In May, a similar proposal to decriminalize cannabis failed to make it through the Senate due to the General Elections.
The bill, approved by Parliament, now heads to the Senate.
If Bermuda eventually adopts the decriminalisation of cannabis, it would join a a global movement to open up the Caribbean, which saw the Jamaica or the Cayman Islands undertake in-depth reforms of their approach to cannabis.
Bermuda is one of the countries with the highest cannabis consumption, 2 places behind France.
