Las Vegas airport installs weed garbage cans
Tourists returning home after a trip to Sin City can now dispose of their leftover legal cannabis in metal trash cans at the Las Vegas airport.
10 « amnesty boxes »were set up at the airport by federal agents before the security checkpoint. The Cannabis is indeed legal in Nevada but still prohibited by the federal government.
These new types of trash cans were installed following last September’s ban on the possession of cannabis and advertising for it at McCarran International Airport—Las Vegas’s main airport—in order to comply with federal law.
Screwed into the ground and designed so that anything placed in them cannot be retrieved, some have been placed near more traditional trash cans, others next to car rental counters, and the rest outside the airport. Their number is expected to rise rapidly to 20, keeping pace with the volume of «deposits,» which the airport is currently having trouble estimating.
«These amnesty boxes are provided to help people comply with this order,» explained the airport spokesperson.
Such dispensers have already been installed at at least two airports in Colorado, where cannabis is also legal. But the Las Vegas airport handles more passengers—over 48 million last year.
Legal cannabis sales have begun on July 1 in Las Vegas. They have exceeded all expectations, despite the ban on drinking in hotels or casinos.
Any adult over the age of 21 may purchase up to 28 grams of marijuana. However, it must be consumed in a private setting.
