G13 is perhaps the most mysterious of all cannabis strains. A powerful indica with hash and earthy aromas, it boasts THC levels of between 15 and 20 % and deep body effects that make it one of the best indicas for therapeutic use. But it's above all its origins, real or mythical, that have earned it a unique worldwide reputation.
The legend of G13: CIA, FBI and the secret program
The most common story about G13 is that, in the late 1960s, the CIA and FBI assembled the best cannabis strains from around the world in a secret facility in the’University of Mississippi, with the aim of creating ultra-powerful hybrids for government research purposes. Among all the plants developed in this classified program, the 13th generation hybrid, the G13, would have been the most successful.
Legend has it that a technician working at the plant succeeded in exfiltrate a cutting of this secret plant. This cutting then circulated among American underground growers, before reaching Europe and spreading throughout the global cannabis community.
A second etymological version proposes a different reading: the G would stand for «Government», and the 13 would refer to the 13th letter of the alphabet, the M, as Marijuana. G13 literally stands for «Government Marijuana».
Are these legends true?
Probably not, or at least not entirely. The University of Mississippi did conduct cannabis research programs for the U.S. government, and this is documented. But there is no concrete evidence of a secret hybridization program producing G13 as we know it today. What is certain is that the strain is descended from a pure Afghan strain, His real story is probably more banal than the myth, but the myth has become an integral part of his identity.
The G13 has also appeared in popular culture: it is mentioned in the film American Beauty (1999), which has largely contributed to his legend among the general public.
Is G13 an indica or a sativa?
The G13 is a very strongly dominant indica, with an estimated proportion of 90 % indica / 10 % sativa. This is one of the purest indicas on the market.
This genetics translates directly into his profile:
- Compact morphology low plant (80-120 cm), dense, resinous buds, typical of Afghan indicas
- Fast flowering 56 to 70 days, much shorter than sativas
- Bodily effects deep physical stoning, muscle relaxation, sedative tendency
It is the opposite of a sativa like Lemon Haze or’Amnesia. G13 is not a daytime variety: its powerful, sedative effects make it an ideal variety. in the evening or before bedtime.
What are the effects of G13?
The effects of G13 arrive quickly and last for a long time. The onset is relatively quick for an indica, with a initial euphoria which quickly gives way to a deep, invasive body relaxation.
Main effects :
- Intense muscle relaxation
- Calm euphoria and general well-being
- Progressive sedation («couch-lock» effect at high doses)
- Slight mental stimulation at the start of the effect before indica takes over
Moderate doses : G13 provides a deep state of well-being, ideal for relaxing after a hard day. Thinking remains clear, but slows down.
High dose : the body stone becomes dominant and can lead to sleepiness. Not recommended if you have things to do.
Possible side effects:
- Dry mouth and dry eyes
- Drowsiness (especially in consumers unfamiliar with indicas)
- Mild paranoia in very high doses
Medical uses of G13
G13 is one of the most widely used strains in therapeutic cannabis, precisely because of its powerful body effects. It is particularly indicated for :
- Chronic pain its analgesic and anti-inflammatory action is one of the strongest of all known indicas
- Inflammation effective on joint and muscle pain associated with autoimmune diseases
- Gastrointestinal disorders G13 cannabinoids can help relieve digestive spasms and discomfort
- Insomnia its pronounced sedative effect makes it an ally for patients suffering from sleep disorders
- Anxiety and stress in moderate doses, it induces a state of deep calm without the stimulating effects of sativas
G13 aromas and terpenes
G13 has a typically Afghan aromatic profile: hash, earth and pine, with spicy notes in the background. Nothing fruity or lemony here, this is a variety with a raw, earthy character reminiscent of traditional resins.
Its dominant terpenes :
- Myrcene The most abundant terpene in most Afghan indicas, it enhances sedative effects and contributes to earthy, musky aromas.
- Caryophyllene brings spicy and peppery notes; also has anti-inflammatory properties of its own
- Pinene responsible for pine and resin notes; may slightly counterbalance the sedative effects of myrcene
G13 cultivation
G13 is a variety accessible to beginner to intermediate growers, thanks to its compact morphology and robustness inherited from its Afghan ancestors.
Indoors :
- Output: 400-500 g/m².
- Compact growth, little trellising required
- Ideal for small growing spaces
- Resistant to mould and temperature variations
Outdoor :
- Harvest: early to mid-October, depending on climate
- Prefers dry, warm climates, but tolerates cooler environments better than most sativas
- Discreet habit, suitable for low-key crops
Varieties derived from G13
The G13 has produced many crosses that are among the most award-winning varieties:
- G13 Haze G13 × Haze cross, balances indica effects with a cerebral sativa touch; probably the most famous descendant
- G13 x Hash Plant back to even deeper Afghan roots
- G13 x Skunk classic crossbreeding to soften effects and accelerate flowering
- Gorilla Glue (often contains a proportion of G13 genetics in certain lines)
